about

note:
First performed in Austria on Christmas Eve in 1818, with words written by a young German priest Joseph Moyer, and set to music by schoolmaster and organist Franz Xaver Gruber, “Silent Night, Holy Night,” (Bing Crosby’s version), is the third best-selling single of all time.
I don’t know where or when my brother Randy and I first heard the counter-melody and lyric heard midway through and at the climax of the version I’ve adopted here. I have no idea who originally penned or performed it. If my memory serves me well, my brother and I only heard this version of Silent Night once; still, it has remained a family favorite for decades. Because it was a one-time only listening experience for us, Randy and I were forced afterward to recall the lyric by memory and I don’t believe we ever quite got them right. In fact, I even toyed with them before recording this version. I still think they’re wrong, but it hardly matters because it’s a melodically beautiful part and when, at the climax of the song, the original song is blended with the newer counter-melody, the effect is close to angelic.
I dedicate this one to my brother Randy, with deep love and affection and all the blessings of this glorious season.

lyrics

Silent Night, Holy Night
words: Joseph Mohr
music: Franz Xaver Gruber
arrangement: Terry Scott Taylor

Silent night, Holy night,
All is calm, All is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, Holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glorious stream from heaven above,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Savior, is born!
Christ the Savior, is born!
There below the star
The child is sleeping
Safe within the fold
Safe from rain and wind and cold
Silent, silent night
Holy, holy night
Sleep in peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
In peace
Silent night, Holy night,
Son of God, Love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
